PELD - ELPA | Ecology of Lahille's bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus gephyreus in the Patos Lagoon estuary and adjacent marine coast
Programa de Pesquisa Ecológica de Longa Duração
Universidade Federal do Rio Grande
Description
Data on the distribution, reproductive and survival rates and abundance of the Lahille's bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops truncatus gephyreus, inhabiting the Patos Lagoon estuary and adjacent marine coast have been collected data from August 2005 to December 2016. Data have been acquired systematically and intensively applying direct observation and photo-identification approaches. This temporal data series allowed estimating the reproductive and survival rates of calf, juvenile and adult (females and males) dolphins and total population abundance. Variability in estimates was evaluated based on the continuity of the long-term surveys carried out during this period.
The dataset is published following Darwin Core sampling event standards in IPT http://ipt.sibbr.gov.br/peld/resource?r=ecology_of_bottlenose_dolphin_-_tursiops_truncatus_on_the_patos_lagoon_estuary_and_adjacent_marine_coast. It is also registered in GBIF http://www.gbif.org/dataset/5f8eeafe-fa02-4e89-9027-d0922d611cca

Purpose
The general purposes of this data bank are to provide information on observations of Lahille's bottlenose dolphins in the Patos Lagoon estuary.
Methods
Estimates of abundance, reproductive and survival rates: Abundance estimates were based on mark-recapture models for closed populations that deals with heterogeneity in capture probabilities. Survival rates were also estimated from mark-recapture models, but in this case, using open population models. The identification and monitoring of mother-calf pairs over time, from the beginning of the breeding season, were designed to allow approximate calculations of birth intervals and reproductive rates and their temporal trends.
